No, dogs can’t eat amaranth as it is toxic. While there are parts that are edible and safe for dogs, the roots, stems, and leaves are all toxic. Even though the seeds of amaranth are not toxic to dogs, it is better not to take the risk. 

Amaranth is a perennial plant that grows only in summer or autumn. In other parts of the world, humans consume amaranth green which is commonly known as Chinese spinach. 

Although there are claims that the amaranth plant contains beneficial vitamins and minerals, the FDA advises against feeding it to dogs.

According to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), pet food must be pure and wholesome and must not contain dangerous or harmful compounds. Amaranth, despite some commercial dog food manufacturers’ claims, does not abide by the FFDCA guidelines. 

It is for this reason that amaranth has been found to contain several anti-nutritive factors, and safety concerns in connection with feeding dogs amaranth have been identified. If your dog accidentally ate amaranth, rinse its mouth with water and bring it immediately to your veterinarian.
