Anis, Anise, or aniseed is also known as catnip for dogs. It is safe for dogs, albeit in moderation and many pet parents sprinkle it on their dog’s food or toys to eliminate doggy breath in their pets.
Please note that anise is a small brown-colored seed whereas, a star-anise is a larger star-shaped seed pod. Star anise has a stronger flavor than anise and is not safe to feed dogs.
In moderation, anise could provide several benefits to dogs including pain relief, treatment of gas, and nausea, and even help reduce the duration of a cold, cough, or chest congestion.
How much anise can you give to your dog? There is no fixed amount but you can safely sprinkle a teaspoon or two of raw anise on your dog’s food (depending on your dog’s size).
Note that this spice has a strong aroma which some pets might not find too appealing. Also, in large doses, anise could cause small dogs to become hyperactive and excitable, so, please practice moderation.
To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping you pup healthy.
