What do baby apes sleep in? Apricots! All jokes aside, can dogs eat these delicious little treats?
Yes, dogs can occasionally have apricots when they are properly prepared. They can be served fresh or dried.Â
Always remove the pit, stem, and leaves which all contain cyanogenic glycosides. When this compound interacts with a dog’s stomach bile it becomes cyanide. If your dog has eaten either the seeds, stem or leaves contact your vet immediately. If your dog eats an apricot and then begins to show symptoms including abdominal pain, irregular heartbeat, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, loss of consciousness, get to a vet immediately. These are signs of cyanide poisoning.
Rinse the apricot off, then prepare teh apricot removing the pit, stem and leaves. Cut the flesh into bite sized pieces appropriate for your pup. Pieces that are too big pose a choking hazard.Â
As with all treats, moderation is key. Apricots are high in fiber and sugar. When they are given to a dog in excess they can cause gastrointestinal distress.
To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping you pup healthy.
