Whole Foods was having a “BOGO” on Asian pears. You figure one for you and one for your pooch. But wait, can your pup have some?
Yes! Asian pears in moderation are a safe treat for your pet. When it comes to pears, a little bit goes a long way!! Small dogs should not have more than a single slice, while larger dogs can have two at most. Too much of this sweet treat can cause gastrointestinal distress.
As with all treats, portion is key. A pup’s diet should not consist of more than 10% treats.
Before offering even a bite to your pooch, be sure to remove all the seeds. The seeds in Asian pears contain cyanide. If your dog ingests the seeds, immediately contact a vet. If you are unsure if your pup may have got a seed, be on the lookout for signs of cyanide poisoning. These symptoms occur quickly, usually within 20 minutes and include abdominal pain, irregular heartbeat, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, and loss of consciousness. Should these symptoms present, get to a vet immediately.
To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping you pup healthy.
