After hearing a TV doctor tout the beneficial properties of bergamot oranges, you got some and now have no idea how to tap into those benefits. Maybe you could just offer some of the fruit to your pup. But can you?
Yes. Bergamot oranges are a safe treat in moderation for your dog. Always remove the peel and any seeds before offering bergamot orange segments to your pup. Seeds pose choking and internal blockage issues especially for small dogs.
Do not give your pup the whole orange with or without the peel. Always offer a small amount in individual segments. Never allow your dog access to discarded peels. Bergamot peels contain compounds that are toxic to dogs.
Especially with bergamot oranges, it is important to note that what is a health benefit for humans is NOT the same for dogs. The essential oils found in the peel are toxic to dogs. Dogs can partake in the orange segments but no other part of the fruit.
Dogs typically love citrus, but monitor how much you give to your dog. Treats should never exceed 10% of your pup’s daily diet. Bergamot oranges have lots of sugar. Excessive sugar in your dog’s diet can lead to weight gain and obesity. Dogs that have diabetes or are overweight should not have bergamot oranges.
Bergamot oranges are high in fiber. Increased fiber can cause digestive issues for your pup including diarrhea. Always monitor your pup after introducing new food or treats. If issues arise, contact your vet.
