Have you heard of borage officinalis? Don’t worry, not many people have. Also known as Star Flower, Borage has numerous health benefits for humans. 

But can you feed it to your pooch?

No. You must not feed borage oil, leaves, or seeds to dogs and puppies. Borage is downright toxic to dogs.

In dogs, borage oil or leaves could result in severe liver toxicity due to its high alkaloid content. Moreover, the tannins and mucilage found in the leaves, stems, and roots of borage could bind with the proteins in your dog’s body causing intestinal distress and even kidney damage.

Symptoms of borage poisoning in dogs include vomiting, diarrhea, and dermatitis.  If your dog or puppy has chewed on borage leaves, then please monitor it. If it shows signs of abdominal pain or discomfort, please see your vet right away.
