Breadfruit is indigenous to tropical climates. Recently, it has been gaining popularity in the US as it is touted as a great replacement for actual bread when properly prepared. Many people in search of the perfect diet have started preparing breadfruit at their homes. If you decide to bring this exotic fruit home, be sure to research proper preparations for humans. But the question remains, is it a safe option to share with your pup?
No, breadfruit is toxic to dogs. Breadfruit fruit, leaves, stems, and flowers all contain calcium oxalates and raphides. Calcium oxalate can cause kidney or bladder stones or in extreme cases cause kidney failure. Raphides are small bundles of insoluble crystals which release into a dogs throat when chewed and swallowed.
If your dog has eaten any part of breadfruit immediately contact your vet. If you see symptoms of drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, swelling, foaming at the mouth, difficulty breathing or swallowing, contact your vet immediately.
