Never feed chives or any member of the Allium family (garlic, onions, and leeks) to your dog. These contain organosulfides which are known to be extremely toxic to dogs and could result in severe gastrointestinal distress.
Certain dog breeds are especially sensitive to chives – especially Akitas and Shiba Inus.
Chives, onions, and garlic, when eaten in large quantities can cause abdominal pain, nausea, drooling, gas, vomiting, and diarrhea in dogs.
Without prompt medical attention, the affected dog may even suffer from damage to its red blood cells. This oxidative damage can result in anemia, respiratory distress, and increased heart rate. Small or weak dogs could even collapse and die.
So, please do not add any chives to your dog’s food. If you suspect your dog has accidentally eaten chives, please call your vet immediately. If the symptoms are already showing, your pet might need IV fluids to prevent further GI symptoms.
