Guacamole contains avocados which can be highly toxic to dogs. Avocados contain a toxin called persin which can be fatal to dogs, in large quantities. Furthermore, guacamole prepared with onion, garlic, and other condiments can result in digestive upsets in dogs.
Persin toxicity in dogs due to avocados usually depends on the dog’s size and the quantity ingested. If your small dog has eaten a lot of guacamole, it could suffer from toxicity symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, seizures, weakness, stomach pain, etc.
If these symptoms arise, it may be best to call and check with your vet. Your vet might advise you to induce vomiting in your dog although it is better to take your dog to the vet’s clinic instead of trying this at home.
Do not worry if your dog has eaten a tiny bit of guacamole. It should be fine. But, if ingested in large quantities, you might want to monitor your dog for the above symptoms over the next few hours.
To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping your pup healthy.
