Guava comes in many different varieties: apple guava, pineapple guava, red guava, white guava, and Thai guava. Then there’s guava paste, guava tea, dried guava, and guava yogurt! With so many options, guava is bound to make its way into your kitchen in some form. But which, if any, are safe for your pup to eat?

Ripe fresh guava flesh, in all its forms, is safe for your pup to eat. Guava skin can be eaten by pups, with the exception of Thai guava. When offering Thai guava to your pup, always remove the peel, which is a choking hazard to your dog. 

With all fresh guava, it is best to remove the seeds before offering the fruit to your dog. Seeds pose a choking risk. Always be sure the guava you are offering to your dog is ripe. 

Fresh guava is high in sugar so moderation is key. Guava paste concentrates the sugar content even more and should not be given to dogs. The same is true for guava tea, and guava yogurt. Dried guava is acceptable for pups, just be aware of the size you give to your pup to avoid choking hazards. 

Because of the sugar content, dogs with diabetes should not be given guava. 

Guava contains pectin which is anti-diarrheal. So pups who are experiencing constipation should not consume guava.
