Yes, you can add kidney beans to your pet’s diet – in moderation but only after cooking them in the correct manner.
Kidney beans contain several vitamins and minerals that are healthy for your dog’s heart and immune system. They are also an excellent protein source. Their fiber content can also keep your dog full longer.
Remember – never feed raw kidney beans to your dog. Raw beans contain phytohaemagglutinin or PHA which is toxic to dogs. Cooking destroys this PHA making cooked beans safe for your pet. Signs of PHA toxicity include severe vomiting and diarrhea. So, please keep raw beans out of your dog’s reach.
To cook kidney beans, soak them in water overnight. The next day, cook them for 45 minutes or until soft. Mash the beans with some cooked meat and add them to your dog’s kibble. Serve kidney beans in moderation to your pet – as an occasional treat. In excess, they could cause gas or flatulence in dogs.
To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping you pup healthy.
