Yes, lentils are safe for dogs to eat. They are an excellent source of plant protein for dogs. However, you must not rely only on lentils to keep your dog healthy. Dogs need animal protein as they are carnivores.

Lentils contain B vitamins and iron which are beneficial for your dog’s nerves, brain, and blood. They also contain magnesium, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, and phosphorous which your dog’s body utilizes for various body functions.

The high fiber in lentils can keep your dog full longer. Fiber can also reduce cholesterol and keep your dog’s heart healthy. It can even prevent constipation in dogs.

To prepare lentils, soak them for an hour to reduce cooking time. Then, pressure-cook them until soft. Mix the softened lentils with your dog’s rice and meat.

Serve lentils in moderation to your pet as, in excess, they could cause DCM or dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs.

To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping you pup healthy.
