Lychee, also known as alligator strawberry, is native to China but has gained popularity around the world. People describe the flavor as a cross between strawberries and a watermelon. It can be eaten on its own, or more commonly added into delicious tropical drinks and desserts. Can your dog partake in this delicious little snack?
No. Dogs should not eat lychee.
Lychee has a long history of being toxic even to humans. Before lychee is ripe it is green. No one, dog or human, should consume green lychee. If your dog eats an unripe lychee, go to an emergency animal hospital.
When lychee ripens the exterior becomes red. The skin is very difficult for a dog to digest and can cause internal blockages. The lychee seed is toxic. It contains saponin, a chemical which causes gastrointestinal distress in both humans and dogs. The flesh of a lychee is potentially acceptable for dogs, however, it has not been studied enough to unequivocally say it is safe for pup consumption.
If you suspect your pup has consumed lychee, monitor your pup for symptoms including drooling, tremors, seizures, vomiting, dark urine. If these symptoms occur, contact your vet immediately.
To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping your pup healthy.
