Nectarines are a delicious sign that summer has finally arrived. On a hot summer day hanging out by the pool can you give one of these sweet treats to your pup?
Yes, fresh nectarines are a safe treat option for your dog. Be sure to wash the outside of the nectarine to remove any pesticides. Chop the fruit into bite size pieces for your pup. Avoid giving large chunks which can be a choking risk for your dog. Always remove the pit. Not only is the pit a choking hazard, it puts your pup at risk for internal blockages. Additionally fruit pits often contain cyanide which is toxic to dogs.
Canned nectarines should not be given to your dog. The preservatives and extra sugar in the syrup is harmful to dogs.
Nectarines are high in sugar so moderation is key when offering this sweet fruit to your pup. Adding too much sugar to your dog’s diet can lead to excess weight gain or obesity. Follow the 10% rule, treats should never amount to more than 10% of your dog’s daily diet.
If this is the first time your pup is trying a nectarine, only offer a small amount and then monitor your pup for allergic reactions. Be mindful that nectarines are also full of fiber which in high amounts can lead to gastrointestinal distress for your pup.
