Prunes, prunes the musical fruit, the more you eat the more you….. Prunes are known for their beneficial properties in keeping humans regular. But are they good for your pup too?

No. While prunes are not toxic to dogs, they are too high in sugar and fiber to be offered to pups. Additionally the seed contains cyanide which is toxic to dogs. The sugar and fiber content lead to an upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhea. 

If your dog has accidentally eaten a prune without the seed, monitor your pup for signs for mild gastrointestinal distress. These mild symptoms should clear up on their own.

If you witness symptoms of abdominal pain, irregular heartbeat, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, loss of consciousness, get to a vet immediately. These are symptoms of cyanide poisoning.
