Quince, pronounced “kwins”, is a fall fruit with a tough yellow exterior. While it looks like it should be sweet like a pear, its flavor is somewhere between a tart apple crossed with citrus. If you decide to take a culinary dip into the world of quince, can you share some with your pup?
Yes, when properly prepared, quince is a safe treat option for your pup. Always remove the skin of the fruit which is hard for a dog to properly digest. The seeds, stem and leaves all contain cyanogenic glycosides. When this compound interacts with a dog’s stomach bile it becomes cyanide. If your dog has eaten either the seeds, stem or leaves contact your vet immediately. If your dog eats a quince and then begins to show symptoms including abdominal pain, irregular heartbeat, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, loss of consciousness, get to a vet immediately. These are signs of cyanide poisoning.
Quince also contains tannins which some dogs cannot tolerate and have an allergic reaction to it. If you are offering your pup quince for the first time, give a small amount and then monitor your dog for adverse reactions.
After removing the skin, seeds, stem and leaves, cut the flesh into small chunks for your pup. Large pieces can cause a choking hazard.
There are many health benefits to offering your pup some quince. Just keep in mind moderation with all treats is key!
To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping you pup healthy.
