We are pretty sure Dr. Seuss was consulted in the creation of rambutan. The red fruit with green spines growing out of it may be a little troubling at first glance. But crack the skin open with your fingers and inside is a delicious white orb. Rambutans are at once sweet and tart. If you are considering trying this exotic fruit, you may wonder, can my pup try some too?
Yes. With proper preparation rambutans are an acceptable treat for pups.
Never give a dog a whole rambutan. Remove the outer skin. The skin poses a choking hazard and internal blockage risks. Cut the fruit open to remove the seed. The rambutan seed contains cyanide which is toxic to dogs. Then offer your pup a few small pieces of the fruit at a time.
Not all dogs enjoy the sweet and sour flavor of rambutans.
If your dog eats a whole rambutan you should contact a vet. If you are unsure if your dog has eaten an entire rambutan, monitor your pup for signs of tremors, seizures, labored breathing, blood in diarrhea, dilated pupils, and smell of bitter almonds in mouth. If you see any of these symptoms, get to a vet immediately. These are signs of cyanide poisoning.
As with all treats, moderation is key. Treats should never account for more than 10% of your dog’s daily diet.
To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping your pup healthy.
