Many dog owners are known to feed aniseed or star anise to their dogs to get their senses going and to ‘hype’ them up. After all; anise is to dogs what catnip is to cats- it stimulates them and gets them perked up.
But if you are like most dog owners, you might get some ‘pre-treat’ anxiety before you let your dog eat anise-based treats – especially if your dog hasn’t eaten them before.
The good news is – you could feed anise to your dog, but only in moderation. Chinese star anise is safe to feed dogs in small quantities.
Note that, in large doses, star anise or aniseed could cause toxicity or food poisoning in dogs, especially the smaller breeds. Too much anise is known to cause diarrhea and even compromise a dog’s immune system.
Note that a variety of anise – Japanese anise – is toxic to dogs and can cause vomiting and seizures. If symptoms occur, contact a vet right away.
To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping you pup healthy.
