Starfruit, or carambola, can be found all over the world today, but originated in Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia. It is, you guessed it, star shaped. While it is not related to the citrus family, its bright crisp flavor resembles the sweet-sour flavor of citrus. Humans need to remove the seeds before eating. It is a matter of preference as to whether you remove waxy skin. When you are indulging in this tasty snack, can you offer some to your pup?
No. There is no safe way for a dog to consume starfruit.
Starfruit contains oxalate salts. When a dog consumes oxalate salts they absorb into the digestive tract. This chemical attaches to the healthy calcium in the body and begins to break it down. Ultimately this leads to kidney failure.
If your dog has eaten any amount of starfruit, take your dog to an emergency dog hospital immediately. If you are unsure if your pup ate starfruit, monitor your dog for signs of diarrhea, vomiting, excessive thirst, excessive urination, and bloody urine. If any of these symptoms arise, take your dog to a vet immediately.
To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping your pup healthy.
