The PON’s outercoat is water resistant while the undercoat is soft and dense. Their hair is prone to picking up debris and matting. Matts not only can be painful, but they can hide skin infections. If you keep your PON with a full coat, be prepared to brush your dog daily, gently working through matts and tangles. If you choose short hair, or “puppy cut” you will still need to brush your pup several times a week. Bathe your pup every 6-8 weeks. Brush your pup thoroughly before you give him a bath. As with all dogs, keep you pup’s eyes and ears clean and clear of debris. Clip your dog’s nails every couple of weeks and brush his teeth several times per week.

As with all dogs, early socialization with humans and other dogs is essential. If you plan on having a PON in a house with children, be aware that your pup’s instincts will be to herd your children and potentially nip at them if they get out of line. You must work early to remove this behavior. With adequate training and supervision, PONs can be a wonderful housemate to little children.
This breed is exceptionally smart which sometimes leads to stubbornness in training. Approach training with patience and confidence. Positive reinforcement will always strengthen your bond with your dog, while harsh reprimands will erode it.
Proper training is essential to ensuring the safety of your dog and those around you. There are many tried and true training programs to accomplish this training – faster and better than you might think!
Unless you’re living on a farm, or have the space, a yipping dog, or one that barks all day when you are gone could be an issue with the neighbors and/or landlord. Barking is deep rooted in dogs and manifests itself in many ways and for a variety of reasons.
Just like any habit or instinct, there are effective ways you can train this issue away.
