What are the Different Types of Bladder Cancer?
There are several types of bladder cancer, but the most common type is urothelial carcinoma, which begins in the cells lining the bladder. Other types include squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and small cell carcinoma, but these are much less common.
Urothelial carcinoma is also known as transitional cell carcinoma, as it arises from the transitional cells that line the bladder. This type of bladder cancer can also occur in the lining of the ureters and the renal pelvis, which are the tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder.
Squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder is a rare type of bladder cancer that develops in the thin, flat cells that line the bladder. This type of bladder cancer is often associated with chronic irritation or inflammation of the bladder, such as from long-term catheter use or bladder stones.
