Rose apples originate in the West Indies and Malaya. They are slightly oval with white, yellow or pink-blush skin, with a crisp dry yellow interior which smells sweet and floral, resembling a rose.
Despite the name it is not related to either a rose or an apple. For humans the anecdotal benefits are numerous including improving cardiovascular health, boosting the immune and digestive systems, treatment for acne and hydrating for skin, and strengthening bones and hair among many others.
With all these benefits, can your pup get in on the healing action?
Yes, with proper preparation rose apples are an acceptable treat for pups in moderation. To offer your pup some of this fruit, remove and discard any seeds, stems and leaves. All of these are toxic to dogs. Cut the flesh into small chunks for your dog. Offer your pup a little at a time to see if it is well tolerated.
As with all treats, moderation is key. Treats should never account for more than 10% of your pup’s daily diet. A word of caution, rose apples are high in potassium and do not contain sodium. If your pup ate a significant amount of rose apple it could lead to potassium toxicity (hyperkalemia).
If your pup eats an extreme amount of rose apples or eats the rose apple’s seeds, stem or leaves, contact your vet.
To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping your pup healthy.
