What Causes Orthostatic Hypotension?
Orthostatic hypotension can be caused by a number of factors, including underlying medical conditions and medications. Some of the most common causes include:
- Dehydration
- Heart problems, such as arrhythmias or valvular disease
- Diabetes
- Parkinson’s disease
- Multiple system atrophy
- Shy-Drager syndrome
- Adrenal insufficiency
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Use of certain medications, such as alpha-blockers, beta-blockers, diuretics, and antidepressants
Other less common causes of orthostatic hypotension include:
- Alcoholism
- Autoimmune disorders
- Neurological disorders, such as spinal cord injuries or multiple sclerosis
- Heat exhaustion or heat stroke
- Severe infections
- Varicose veins
- Genetic disorders
- Malnutrition
- Chronic kidney disease
