You saw these adorable tangerines at the grocery store. They are basically baby oranges. You just love baby-ed versions of food. But apparently you don’t actually like tangerines. Can you offer some to your pup?
Yes. Tangerines are a safe treat for pups in moderation. Before giving some to your dog, be sure to remove the peel and any seeds. Seeds pose choking and internal blockage issues especially for small dogs. Do not give your pup the whole fruit with or without the peel. Instead, offer segments one at a time. Never allow your dog access to discarded peels. Citrus peels contain compounds that are toxic to dogs.
Your pup will likely enjoy tangerines, but monitor how much you offer. Treats should never exceed 10% of your pup’s daily diet. Tangerines are full of sugar. Too much sugar in your dog’s diet can lead to excessive weight gain and obesity. Dogs that have diabetes or are overweight should not have tangerines.
Tangerines are also high in fiber. Excessive fiber can cause digestive issues for your pup including diarrhea. Always monitor your dog after introducing new food or treats. If issues arise, contact your vet.
