Black mustard (Brassica nigra) seeds contain a toxic compound called isothiocyanate. This is known to cause edema (or swelling) and irritation of the airways resulting in acute respiratory issues in dogs.
Mustard seeds also contain glucosinolates which are toxic to dogs. They can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal distress in your pet. Ground mustard seeds or mustard powder is often used to induce vomiting in dogs if they swallow something harmful.
If your pet has accidentally swallowed mustard seeds, please keep an eye on them. If the above symptoms arise, call your vet right away.
In addition to mustard seeds, you must also avoid feeding yellow mustard paste, raw mustard greens, charlock mustard, and mustard oil to your dog.
