Health

Tervs are generally healthy pups. Some concerns to be aware of include elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, patella luxation, epilepsy, allergic dermatitis, persistent pupillary membrane, cryptorchidism, cataracts, hypothyroidism, gastric carcinoma, optic nerve hypoplasia, demodicosis, cancer, vitiligo, retinal dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, chronic superficial keratitis, progressive retinal atrophy, von Willebrand disease, dental disease, osteochondritis dissecans, and bloat.

While you always hope your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance.

Keeping your dog’s mouth clean and problem free goes a long way to your pup’s overall health. Dental hygiene can be the cause or can be the byproduct of other serious health issues.

Visual inspections can be performed to keep track of the signs of potentially waning oral health. These signs can be anything from bad breath to abnormal chewing to loss of appetite.

Keeping ahead of these warning signs can pay dividends. A preventative approach can delay and stop many of the common dental problems from arising.

Oral health can be tackled in five basic steps:

  1. Brushing your dog’s teeth to prevent an undesirable buildup of plaque
  2. Feed your dog a diet where the high quality dog food has dental benefits
  3. Regularly give your dog dental toys and treats
  4. Use mouthwash, to help where brushing misses
  5. At the sign of any abnormalities, consult a vet. You can even do it virtually, from the convenience of your home.

Dogs are just like humans in that they can experience anxiety. The degree to which they are susceptible to anxiety and how they deal with anxiety is breed specific. Left unchecked, initial signs of anxiety could give way to an anxiety disorder. The symptoms of anxiety disorders can lead to a myriad of behavior issues.

Knowing the signs and symptoms will best equip you to keep ahead of it and to nip it in the bud at the earliest signs. There are options available to help with anxiety.

Grooming

Tervs have a thick double coat. It sheds a moderate amount throughout the year. Brushing your pup with a pin brush once or twice a week will help remove any dead hair, tangles or matts. If you do find any matting work slowly and gently to remove it. Matts that are left in hair can lead to irritation or even hair loss. The coat will also go through two season sheds where the entire undercoat is shed. During this time brushing your pup every day will help contain the hair loss around your home. Bathe your pup every month or two, depending on how dirty your pup gets. Excessive washing will lead to dry skin and irritation. Trim your pup’s nails regularly. Check you pup’s ears weekly for any debris or wax buildup. Brush your pup’s teeth several times per week.

Cost

$800 – $2500

Exercise

Tervs need lots of exercise time. These pups seem to be perpetually in motion. They prefer to spend their exercise time with their human. Plan on spending between 1-2 hours in activity with your pup. They enjoy brisk walks, jogging, hiking, and playing fetch. If their exercise requirements are not met, they can become quite destructive. This pup is not for everyone, be sure you have the time for this dog before taking one on.

Nutrition

Your full-sized Terv will eat around 2.5 cups of food per day. The exact requirements of your pup will vary depending on their age, size and activity level. Always provide fresh clean water for your dog.

Training

As with all dogs, early socialization with humans and other pups is essential. This breed does not always get along with other dogs. Introducing lots of other pups early on can help combat this difficult trait. Start obedience training for your pup as early as possible. It is easier to instill positive behaviors in a small pup than it is to relearn behaviors in a large one. Set a firm pack order early. Being the alpha does not mean being cruel, instead be firm and commanding. Tervs respond best to positive reinforcement training. Keep training fun and varied with lots of treats.

Proper training is essential to ensuring the safety of your dog and those around you. Having your dog come when they should, and in general having them listen is something you want to address early in your pup’s life, as it will pay dividends down the line. There are many tried and true training programs to accomplish this training – faster and better than you might think!

Unless you’re living on a farm, or have the space, a yipping dog, or one that barks all day when you are gone could be an issue with the neighbors and/or landlord. Historically, dogs would bark to communicate with the rest of the pack when hunting and bark as a warning shot to predators eyeing up their flock. Barking is deep rooted in dogs and manifests itself in many ways and for a variety of reasons.

Just like any habit or instinct, there are effective ways you can train this issue away.
