Can You Use An Air Purifier And Humidifier Together

Should you double up with air purifiers and humidifiers?

Many don’t use air purifiers and humidifiers together just with the idea that they must not be used at the same time. Although both machines have different functions, they can’t be placed close so that the moisture coming from the humidifier won’t damage the HEPA filter in the air filter. These machines are used because you and your family may breathe in pollutants such as dust, fibers, and pollens which may trigger certain health conditions including asthma, skin allergies, cold, flu, and even skin diseases. But just like anyone else you might have the same question in mind which is Can you use an air purifier and humidifier together?”

What is an Air Purifier?

This helps in purifying the air from pollutants and harmful contaminants which can be used when the dust is abundant in your home when your allergies are triggered even if you’re inside, you experience shortness of breath at home, and if you have pets at home. It can also be used when someone makes use of cigarettes inside as well as if the air feels stale. Air purifiers are used to eliminate certain health problems for those who have sensitive skin, allergies, asthma, and other related health conditions.

Types of Air purifiers

HEPA Air Purifiers.

This uses HEPA filters that trap 99.9% of contaminants because the filters have accordion-like surfaces that have a larger surface area to trap pollutants.

Activated Carbon Filters on Air purifiers

This consists of filters that are made up of carbon extracted from bamboo or charcoal. It has a highly porous surface that is efficient in absorbing air contaminants where the filter pores make chemical bonds to trap the smaller particles that HEPA Air Purifiers cannot filter.

Air Purifiers with UV Technology

This captures small organic pollutants that are called VOCs (bacteria, germs, and viruses) that are present in the air. Although UV technology is not commonly found in other purifiers, researchers are still searching for its effectiveness in destroying microbial pollutants.

What is a Humidifier?

It is a machine used to humidify a room with the ideal humidity level which is 30 to 50%. Your skin requires moisture in the air so you could stay hydrated because without enough moisture it would be difficult to breathe. This can happen due to the drying of the mucous membrane of your body when your body doesn’t get proper moisture. It is recommended by the US Environmental Agency (EPA) that the relative humidity inside a home must be at least 35% to stay hydrated enough to maintain proper functions of the body. Humidifiers are also known as a machine that helps with problems caused by air like sinus congestion, snoring, dry skin and hair, common cold, and nose bleeding.

Types of Humidifiers

Warm mist Humidifier

It produces a warm and soothing mist which is good for treating colds and flu. It converts water to a warm mist vapor. Also, this kind of humidifier requires frequent cleaning

Cold Mist Humidifier

This kind of humidifier makes use of a filter to trap different minerals and impurities from the air and then provides a cool mist that evaporates into the air. Compared to the warm mist humidifier it is easier to clean but it makes a lot of noise.

Ultrasonic humidifier

This produces a cool mist with ultrasonic vibration which also has warm versions that are available. This is known as a good humidifier for children’s rooms because it creates droplets of water released like a cool fog in the air.

Whole-House Humidifier

This kind of humidifier covers a large area because they are equipped with large tanks which can hold water for several days. It also has air filters which require cleaning every 3 months.

Benefits of using an air purifier and humidifier

Yes! Using machines together is perfectly fine. Air purifiers and humidifiers have different functions and don’t affect each other.  Air purifiers are filters to ensure clean air while a humidifier ensures that there is ideal humidity in the room. Also, an air purifier does not filter moisture, so it won’t be working against the humidifier to dry out the air. You may invest in such devices if you have health problems as mentioned in the descriptions of the devices.

What are the benefits of having both an Air purifier and a humidifier at home?

  • The machines are therapeutic and stress relieving which may help you to stay in a good mood.
  • Some air purifiers and humidifiers help a lot in keeping fresh air which makes your home smell good.
  • The use of the machines reduces medical expenses because it keeps your home free from any bacteria and viruses.
  • The machines are used to prevent the effects of dry skin and prevent getting triggered by skin allergies
  • Most of them are portable and have useful features with a digital screen

Which is better to use in a baby’s room?

Air purifiers and humidifiers are both good for a baby’s health. The humidifier will help the baby breathe easier because of the added moisture because moist air reduces symptoms of cough and cold that the baby may have when not in ideal humidity. In addition, Air purifiers will help in cleaning the air.

Which is better to use when you have asthma?

Preferably, an air purifier must be used in rooms for people with asthma to have purified air that remove toxins and contaminants that may trigger the disease. You would be more comfortable inhaling the air while breathing because a humidifier only makes the air fresh to breathe. A humidifier only eases the symptoms that were caused by the dry air. Also, if the humidity level increases above 50, it can cause asthma attacks because viruses and bacteria grow in high humidity.
