Thanksgiving is on the horizon. Your brother-in-law’s wife who apparently has never seen a kitchen was desperate to sign up to bring a dish. You agreed to her making green beans which of course she destroys. So here you are an hour before dinner making green bean casserole, and your pup is begging for some of the action. Can your pup have green beans?
Green beans by themselves are completely safe for your dog. A raw, steamed or baked are all acceptable ways to give your pup some green beans. Note that the beans must be completely plain. No butter, salt or seasonings added. Salt can lead to salt toxicity. Many human seasonings are poisonous to dogs.
Be mindful that canned green beans often have salt added. They should not be given to your dog.
Always cut green beans into small bites. Giving the entire pod to your dog can cause choking or internal blockages.
As with all human foods, always keep green beans in moderation. They make an excellent alternative to treats, especially if your pup is on a diet.
Many dog owners have had success with the “green bean diet” which gradually replaces green beans for kibble in your dog’s diet. While this might be an excellent solution to your pup’s weight issues, always talk to a veterinarian before drastically changing your pup’s diet.
Obesity is a serious issue with dogs as it often leads to pancreatitis.
