Java plum, or juman fruit, is considered one of the healthiest fruits for humans. They are loaded with beneficial vitamins, minerals and even protein. With all these benefits for humans, is it the same for pups?
Yes, Java plum is an okay choice to give your pup but only in moderation and when properly prepared.
Java plums are a small fruit with a hard pit that is large in relation to the size of the fruit itself. The pit contains cyanide, which if ingested by your dog will cause cyanide poisoning. Additionally the pit often breaks when attempting to remove it, leaving fragments filled with cyanide. When you remove the pit make sure you have not left any of it behind, or cut around the area where the pit was.
As with all treats, moderation is key. Only offer a small amount, one or two pieces a day to your pup. Java plums are high in sugar. They are not a suitable choice for dogs with diabetes.
If your dog has eaten a java plum with the pit, contact your vet immediately. If your dog has eaten a java plum without the seed, monitor your pup for signs including abdominal pain, irregular heartbeat, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, loss of consciousness. If they arise, get to a vet immediately, as these are signs of cyanide poisoning.
To ensure your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance. Preparing for the unexpected guarantees money is never an issue in keeping you pup healthy.
