Tomato sauce enhances the taste of many human foods but is it safe for your dog?
The answer is no. It is best not to feed tomato sauce to dogs.
Most tomato sauces are made with spices like salt, sugar, and other condiments. Many varieties also contain garlic and onions. Garlic and onions are strictly prohibited for dogs as they contain toxic compounds like organosulfides which can cause toxicity in dogs. Symptoms of organosulfide toxicity include vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea, etc.
Moreover, some tomato sauces are made using vinegar which can be acidic to dogs. It can cause a burning sensation in your dog’s mouth. Too much tomato sauce can cause hyperacidity in pets resulting in vomiting.
Also, note that some dogs are allergic to tomatoes and could develop issues like skin irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pains after consuming tomatoes or tomato-based foods.
Therefore, to be on the safe side, it may be best not to feed any kind of tomato sauce to your fur baby.
