Remember the good old days when kale was the just backdrop for all the other fruits and vegetables at the grocery store. Nowadays everyone is shouting about the benefits of kale. We get it, it’s healthy. But boy if it doesn’t taste just terrible. You have a whole head of it sitting in your fridge just staring at you. Can you just hand it to the dog and be done with it?
No. Kale contains several natural compounds that are harmful to dogs.
Calcium oxalate can cause kidney or bladder stones. Dogs prone to urinary tract issues and kidney stones should doubly avoid kale and other vegetables with calcium oxalate including spinach, Swiss chard, collards, parsley, leeks, okra, quinoa, beet greens, and roots of beets.
When fed to dogs regularly, kale interferes with normal thyroid functions.
If your dog has eaten a small amount of kale, it is likely fine. Monitor your dog for symptoms vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty urinating contact your vet.
While kale may not be completely toxic to dogs, this is one food that we definitely recommend keeping away from your pup.
