You are on a health kick again. No more popcorn or chips, there will be only healthy treats for you. You steam up some edamame and sit down to rewatch Bridgerton. Your trusty sidekick is curling up beside you. Can you offer him some edamame?
This one falls under maybe. While edamame is not toxic to dogs, many dogs are allergic to soy.
When giving your dog edamame, you can offer it raw or steamed. Always remove the pods which can cause choking and internal blockages. If you offer cooked beans, always avoid cooking with salt, seasonings or oil. Cook them without salt, seasoning or oil. Salt can cause salt toxicity. Human seasonings are also often toxic to dogs. Adding oil or butter to your dog’s food will cause gestational irritation and unnecessary weight gain.
If you are unsure if your dog is allergic to soy and you want to offer edamame, only give a very small amount to start. Then monitor your dog for adverse reactions. Reactions may have a slow onset and can include excessive itching, excessive licking, chronic ear infections, hair loss, vomiting, and diarrhea.
So while it may be okay to give your dog edamame, this is one food item we would recommend skipping.
