Dana down the street has been feeding her dog raw meat. She has a whole Insta following over it. She has like 10,000 followers. It seems like her pup is thriving. Can dogs actually eat raw meat?
The short answer is yes. Dogs can eat raw meat.
Many people decide to choose a raw diet for their dogs. Health benefits are said to include easier digestion, skin and coat health, and oral health. These claims are all still being researched but owners anecdotally claim these benefits and more for their pups.
There are risks associated with raw meat diets.
Malnutrition is a major concern when opting into a raw diet. Many owners assume meat alone will suffice. However, without the proper vitamins and minerals, your dog will face a host of issues including frail bones and weak teeth. If you are considering switching your dog to a raw diet, consult a veterinarian to create a plan that suits your dog’s needs.
Another concern is bacterial infection from raw meat. Meat that has been contaminated cannot be seen by the naked eye. Cooking meat to specific internal temperatures ensures that all of the possible bacteria has been killed. Dogs can also consume bacteria and suffer no symptoms while spreading the bacteria throughout your home. It is not advised for families with small children to feed dogs a raw diet.
If you opt into a raw diet, again speak with a veterinarian to formulate a well rounded diet for your dog. Always disinfect all surfaces the raw meat touches. Be mindful to always wash your own hands after handling meat or your dog’s bowl before and after mealtime.
Raw bones are also okay to give your dog as long as they are big enough. Do not give your pup small or cooked bones that can splinter, cause choking or internal blockages.
