You are making a cake for Carla’s “finally divorced” party. You are so distracted wondering if your planned decorations are even possible that one of the eggs drops to the floor. Can your dog just clean it up?
Yes, but there are risks associated with dogs eating raw eggs.
There is an inconclusive debate over dogs experiencing increased benefits from raw eggs versus potentially exposure to bacteria. Many owners opt to cook eggs without butter, seasoning or salt. Butter can cause gastrointestinal irritation. Human seasoning can be toxic to dogs. Salt can cause salt toxicity.
Other owners point to the anecdotal evidence that dogs have consumed raw eggs for centuries and there have been no major outbreaks of contamination to our furry friends.
The two major forms of bacteria that may be in raw eggs are salmonella and E. coli. Both cause gastrointestinal symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, and fever. If you notice any of these symptoms after your dog eats raw eggs, contact a veterinarian.
Also note that both types of bacteria can be transmitted to humans through feces, saliva and vomit. Be mindful when you are cleaning up after your dog to thoroughly disinfect yourself and anything the contaminated substances have touched.
