While you always hope your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance.
Keeping your dog’s mouth clean and problem free goes a long way to your pup’s overall health. Dental hygiene can be the cause or can be the byproduct of other serious health issues.
Visual inspections can be performed to keep track of the signs of potentially waning oral health. These signs can be anything from bad breath to abnormal chewing to loss of appetite.

There are several options for your pup’s coat. If you keep Havanese longhaired, it will require daily brushing to keep their wavy coat free of matts and tangles. Weekly bathing will be a must to keep hair clean. If you clip your pup’s coat back, with clippings every 6-8 weeks, you will only need to brush it every couple of days.
Bathing to keep Havanese’s hair clean can happen every two weeks. The final option is to allow your pup’s hair (sometimes with encouragement) to cord into ringlets. Ringlets do not require brushing but will again require weekly bathing to keep your pup clean.
Keep your pup’s eyes and ears clean and clear of debris. Keep their nails clipped and brush their teeth several times a week.

Havanese do not require strenuous exercise. A short brisk walk or playing in the house should be enough for your pup. If at any point your pup is breathing heavily, you have hit your pup’s limit and you should discontinue play.
If you are involved in the exercise your pup will be happy.
When you pup is left alone too long it may become destructive. When you are away always supply Havanese with ample toys.
On average, Havanese eat about 1 cup of food per day. The specific requirements of your dog will depend on their age and activity level. Regardless of the final amount, you should serve your pup food in two separate meals. Havanese tend to overeat.
Be mindful of the amount of treats you dole out and keep an eye on the scale. Havanese should avoid eating human food, especially since they can sneakily “train” their humans into regularly sharing their food.

As with all dogs, early socialization with humans and other dogs is key. Havanese responds best to training with lots of positive reinforcement. They are happy and eager to learn.
Avoid harsh discipline as it is more likely to cause your pup to shut down, then correct behavior.
Havanese sometimes have difficulty housetraining. Keep a positive attitude and be patient while being mindful to give your pup extra trips outside.
Proper training is essential to ensuring the safety of your dog and those around you. Having your dog come when they should, and in general having them listen is something you want to address early in your pup’s life, as it will pay dividends down the line. There are many tried and true training programs to accomplish this training – faster and better than you might think!
Unless you’re living on a farm, or have the space, a yipping dog, or one that barks all day when you are gone could be an issue with the neighbors and/or landlord. Historically, dogs would bark to communicate with the rest of the pack when hunting and bark as a warning shot to predators eyeing up their flock. Barking is deep rooted in dogs and manifests itself in many ways and for a variety of reasons.
Just like any habit or instinct, there are effective ways you can train this issue away.
