Proceed with caution – is the recommendation when offering your pup cherries.
The stems and pits of cherries contain cyanide which is toxic. Additionally swallowing pits can cause choking or internal blockages.
If you suspect your pup has eaten the pit of a cherry, be on the lookout for signs of intestinal blockage.
If your dog consumed multiple pits, be on the lookout for signs of toxicity.
When you give your pup cherries, always remove the pits and stems, and wash your fruit.
Cherries that are in cans or jars, like maraschino cherries, are not acceptable for dogs. The juice to keep the cherries fresh is full of sugar.
As with any fruit, only offer your pup cherries in small amounts. Dog diets that are high in sugar ultimately lead to diabetes or obesity.
