Dogs cannot eat chocolate. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine both of which are harmful to pups. Both theobromine and caffeine increase your dog’s heart rate and trigger a nervous system response.
The size of your dog, the type of chocolate, and how much chocolate your dog ate will play into the severity of the reaction. Reactions typically occur 6-12 hours after the ingestion. Chocolate reactions can be cardiac events, seizures or death.
If you believe your dog ingested a significant amount of chocolate, you should contact a vet immediately. They will be able to determine if your dog is in danger and needs medical attention.
The amount of theobromine in chocolate varies with cocoa powder being the most potent. In descending order after cocoa powder is unsweetened baker’s chocolate, semisweet chocolate (like the chips of chocolate chip cookies), dark chocolate and then milk chocolate.
Even if you have a big dog, chocolate should never be intentionally given to a dog.
