Every time you walk into Costco you blackout and come back to your car with a cart full of impulse buys. (Don’t worry you aren’t alone). Today you are going home with 4 gigantic pumpkins that were only $5 a pop. What are you going to do with all of this pumpkin? Can you give some to your dog?
Yes. Pumpkin in moderation is an excellent treat for your dog.
If you are using a fresh pumpkin, cut the pumpkin into chunks that are appropriately sized for your dog to avoid choking risks. Never give your dog the stem. You can prepare your pumpkin by giving it raw, stemmed, baked or pureed.
When using fresh pumpkin, you can also give your dog pumpkin seeds in moderation as well. Pumpkin seeds are high in fat.
If you are using canned pumpkin for your dog, always check your ingredient list. Only offer your pup pumpkin that does not have added salt or seasonings. Salt can cause salt toxicity. Human seasonings are also toxic to dogs.
Never give your dog pumpkin pie filling. Canned pumpkin pie filling contains xylitol which even in small quantities is toxic to dogs.
Pumpkin is an excellent treatment option for dogs having digestive issues including diarrhea and constipation. Before opting into homeopathic remedies, it is always a good idea to contact your vet to find out if it is right for your dog and what quantities you should use.
