Our pups often feel like full on family members, so when we pick a delicious ripe tomato we may want to share it, but should we?
Ripe red tomatoes are non-toxic and are safe for your pup to eat, in moderation. You will need to remove stems and leaves, wash the tomato, and cut it into pieces your pup will not choke on. Tomatoes are also acidic, so be mindful to limit consumption. Too much acid can cause gastrointestinal problems.
Do not allow your dog to eat unripe tomatoes. The green skin of unripe tomatoes have solanine that can be toxic to dogs when consumed in large quantities. It is always best to avoid the unripe fruit.
If your dog gets into your tomato plant and eats large quantities of leaves or unripened tomatoes, be on the lookout for signs of toxicity.
If you see any of these signs, it is best to consult a licensed vet immediately. You can set time online, 24-7 for a virtual appointment with licensed vet here.
