Despite their size, Affenpinscher’s are known to be fearless regardless of the threat. These charming and silly pups do not like being over stimulated especially in play and are best suited to adults. While some can be family pets, children should avoid chasing or being rough with Affens, as they do not like this type of energy and activity. They are known for being goofballs. Affenpinschers were originally bred as ratters in Germany dating back to the 1500s. As a result, they do not mix well with small pets.
Affens are often fondly called “monkey terriers” owing not only to their unusual facial structure but also their playful nature. These pups have large eyes, broad-chests, short muzzles and have ears that can either naturally droop or stand tall. Their tails can be docked to one to three inches or left in their slightly curved natural state.

Because of Affen’s mischievous nature, the French refer to them as “diablotin moustachu” which translates into mustached little devil.
