You were in a Costco haze when you bought a 6 pack of bell peppers. What were you thinking? You will never be able to eat this many before they go bad. Can you give some to your dog?
Yes! Red, orange, yellow or green bell peppers are all safe for your dog to eat. Red is the most nutritious but all the colors still provide beneficial vitamins to your pup. Remember when offering your dog human food, it should always be done sparingly.
Be sure to chop the peppers into bite sized chunks before you offer them to your dog. You can give them to your dog raw, steamed or baked. If you give your dog cooked peppers, be sure to avoid seasoning, salt and oils. Human seasoning and oils (including butter) can be harmful to dogs. Additionally, adding salt to your pup’s food can cause salt toxicity.
Be sure you understand the type of pepper you are offering to your dog. Bell peppers are generally a sweet crisp pepper. Spicy peppers, like jalepenos, should never be shared with your dog as they will definitely cause harm.
If you are introducing bell peppers to your dog for the first time, only allow a little and watch for signs of gastrointestinal irritation. Like humans, some foods just don’t sit right with our furry friends.
