Talk about a jack of all trades, potatoes are the most versatile guy on the block. Potato chips, mashed potatoes, scalloped, au gratin, french fries, tater tots, potato pancakes and the list can go on. But can dogs eat them?
Solanine which exists in raw potatoes in high quantities decreases once a potato is cooked. So the answer is yes, dogs can eat potatoes, but only when they are cooked.
Dogs should only be offered cooked potatoes when they are baked or boiled without any butter, oil, salt or seasoning. Adding salt to dog’s food should always be avoided as it can cause salt toxicity. Additive fat should not be introduced to your dog’s diet as it can lead to obesity or even pancreatitis.
Dogs that are obese or have diabetes should not have potatoes. The glycemic index on potatoes is too high.
